L. V. Prasad Eye Institutes

L. V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) is a non-profit, world-class eye-care network headquartered in Hyderabad, India. Established in 1987 by Dr. Gullapalli Nageswara Rao, its mission is to provide equitable, high-quality eye care to all sections of society, with a strong emphasis on underserved communities. LVPEI combines patient care, education, research, rehabilitation, and advocacy under one integrated model.

Its core business encompasses comprehensive ophthalmic services, ranging from primary eye care and vision screening to highly specialized tertiary care. The institute operates multiple clinical services, including surgical ophthalmology, preventive eye health, eye banking, and vision rehabilitation for those with irreversible visual impairment. It also leads cutting-edge research into eye diseases and training for ophthalmic personnel at all levels.

LVPEI serves a diverse clientele: from rural and urban patients (many of whom receive care free or at subsidized cost), to complex tertiary cases referred from across India and abroad. On the academic side, students, researchers, and policy partners engage with LVPEI through its education programs and WHO-collaborating centre status.

The network is expansive, with its main Centre of Excellence in Hyderabad, tertiary centres in Bhubaneswar, Visakhapatnam, and Vijayawada, and over 275 primary and secondary eye-care centres across several Indian states.
