Work & Experience
I provide service both to our in-patient and outpatient (Clinics) service users, therefore I have been working along with the entire multidisciplinary team in delivering a safe, quality and effective care for all.
I provide medical imaging services to patients in our fast-paced hospital setting. I work with our in-patients, ranging from adult general patients in the wards and private rooms, critically ill patients in the Intensive care unit, emergency patients in the admission unit, children and paediatric patients. I also attend to service users who are referred by our doctors from their clinics who require radiologic procedures for diagnostic testing.
I carry out procedures such as X-rays (e.g. Chest PA and Lateral view, whole spine series, etc.) Ultrasounds (e.g. Whole abdomen, special procedures such as thoracentesis, Liver Biopsy, etc.). Mammography, CT-Scan, I use a range of radiographic equipment, including surgical and portable equipment to do x-rays involved in the surgeries in the operating room such as ORIF, Hysterosalphingography, colangioraphy, etc. I have also been trained and qualified to perform as an MRI technologist which allows me to perform MRI scans (e.g. cranial with MRA, whole spine, extremities, etc.). I can competently and safely use this imaging equipment to create diagnostic images of patients to detect early diagnosis for their treatment.
With every procedure I have conduct, I always assess the patient to make sure the procedure they are undergoing is safe and effective for them. This involves gathering patient history, reviewing current and past medical history, allergy status such as reactions to the contrast media, assessing if it is safe for patients to undergo procedures such as the MRI, for instance asking them if they have any metal in or on their body, checking for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or those who have kidney problems.
In every radiologic procedure I carry out, I always ensure that I work safely using the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles to minimise radiation exposure for X-ray, CT, or fluoroscopy exams.
After each procedure I analyse, evaluate and provide a detailed report of the results for radiologists, doctors, surgeons and other healthcare professionals involved with patient care. This involves reviewing images for any abnormalities, ensuring that images meet diagnostic standards and are free of artifacts, properly show the required anatomy and pathology and tailoring imaging parameters to optimise image quality based on the patient’s size, age, and specific clinical indications. I input these evaluations into our system which can be accessed by the MDT in our hospital.
This previous role as a Radiologic technologist in this institution is based on an outpatient setting. The Doctors or clinicians referred their patients from their clinics or as part of their hospital discharge follow up assessment.
I have worked with service users, both adults and children. This service can range from a diagnostic test as requested by clinicians, assisting in ultrasonography for pregnant women, or for patients who have requested their clinicians for an annual medical check up or those who require a specific radiologic procedure for job requirement purposes.
I have provided radiologic procedures such as X-rays (Chest, Hand AP and oblique views, bilateral knees AP and lateral view, etc.) Ultrasounds (E.g. thyroid, scrotal, pelvic, etc). These produce diagnostic images of patients for assessment and aid in diagnosis, for example the presence of consolidation in the chest that can suggest pleural effusions, pneumonias, and nodules, x-rays of hands or legs to confirm fractures, diagnosis of cholelithiasis, nephrolithiasis or fatty liver through ultrasound. I have performed Fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid for cancer staging. These radiologic procedures helped in the identification of the treatment plan and evaluation of the medical condition of each patient.
In every procedure I have conducted a thorough assessment for the patient, which involves gathering of patients' past and current medical history, and the proper identification of any physical health issues such as allergy status and contraindication to a specific procedure.
I help in the proper positioning of the patient to ensure optimal imaging results. I carry out all procedures safely and effectively. I analyse, evaluate and produce detailed reports for radiologists, clinicians and other healthcare professionals.
I also understand the importance of ensuring that all the equipment used is checked, regularly maintained, and working properly for optimal performance and for the safety of the patients.
I analyse, evaluate and report these images or results to our radiologists to determine if more images are needed. These results or findings are then relayed to the responsible clinicians of the patients.
After qualifying I had the opportunity to gain some work experience in this acute hospital, performing Ultrasounds for both adult and children inpatients and those who attended a clinic outpatient appointment. This involves performing general Ultrasound such as whole abdomen in identifying underlying conditions such as gallstones, kidney stones, hepatomegaly and more. I performed chest ultrasounds for pleural effusion and procedures such as thoracocentesis. I did ultrasound for thyroid to locate lesions or masses of the gland.
In this job, I assessed the patients, assisted them in the procedure, provided proper instructions, recorded results and reported to the radiologist. I also made sure that all equipment was working properly. I worked based on the local and national guidelines in delivering a safe, effective and efficient care and procedure to all service users.
